Dear Colleagues,
Diabetic retinopathy (DR) continues to present significant challenges despite recent advancements in its diagnostics and treatments. As the global burden of diabetes grows, effective prevention and management of diabetic blindness remain at the forefront of ophthalmic research. In the Sep/Oct issue of APJO, we published a perspective article by Prof. Tien Yin Wong and his team on the latest developments aimed at combating diabetic eye disease, anchored by our editorial, which emphasizes that diabetic blindness remains a substantial challenge despite recent innovations.

Moreover, we have a study describing the effects of childhood atropine treatment on adult choroidal thickness, revealing that early exposure to atropine is associated with a thicker choroid in adulthood. This finding may have significant implications for understanding ocular health as patients age.

Additionally, public health concerns are further addressed in a real-world assessment of drug-related dry eye risk, which leverages data from the FDA adverse event reporting system. This study sheds light on the prevalence of drug-induced dry eye, a condition affecting millions of patients globally, emphasizing the need for improved pharmacovigilance.

Other publications include 1) Long-term outcomes of combined phacotrabeculectomy in a Singapore tertiary hospital; 2) Accuracy of large language models in answering ophthalmology board-style questions; 3) Development of an AI-based mobile app to reduce cataract backlogs in Uttar Pradesh, India; 4) Acute macular neuroretinopathy related to the COVID-19 pandemic; 5) Challenges in managing inherited retinal diseases across the Asia-Pacific: A survey from the APIED network; 6) Advances in IgG4-related ophthalmic disease; and 7) Chromosome 8q gain and high EZH2 expression as predictors of poor prognosis in Chinese uveal melanoma patients.
